Removing Oil and Grease from Stone Driveways: A Fila Solutions How-To

Driveways and garage floors endure a lot of wear and tear, especially in high-traffic areas. Stone and concrete surfaces can quickly accumulate oil, grease, and grime from vehicles, making them not only unsightly but also slippery and potentially hazardous. The good news is that with the right approach, maintaining these surfaces doesn't have to be a chore. In this guide, we'll walk you through a simple, effective process using Fila Solutions' high-quality products to restore your driveway to its original condition.

Why Oil and Grease Stains Are Hard to Remove

Oil and grease penetrate the surface of natural stone and concrete, making stains challenging to remove without causing damage. This is especially true for porous stones like limestone or sandstone, where the stains can seep deeply. However, with the right treatment, it's possible to not only remove these stains but also protect your driveway from future damage.

As Scott Newton, Managing Director of Surtec, explains, "Using Fila Solutions ensures you're getting a quality result without the risk of damaging your surfaces. Our products are specifically formulated for stone and concrete care, providing effective solutions that are easy to use."

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

Start by sweeping the area to remove loose dirt and debris. If the surface is wet or damp, let it dry before proceeding, as the cleaning agents will work more effectively on a dry surface. Preparing the area ensures the cleaning product can penetrate deeply into the stone, targeting the oil and grease effectively.

Step 2: Apply Fila PS87 Degreaser

Fila PS87 is a versatile degreaser that's safe for natural stone and concrete. It's designed to cut through stubborn grease and oil stains without harming the surface. For heavy stains, apply the product undiluted directly onto the stain, using a soft-bristle brush to work it into the affected area. Allow the product to sit for at least 10-15 minutes.

For lighter stains, you can dilute the PS87 with water in a 1:5 ratio, following the same procedure.

Step 3: Scrub and Rinse

Once the degreaser has had time to penetrate the stain, scrub the area with the brush to loosen the dirt and grime. Then, rinse thoroughly with clean water, using a pressure washer or a hose. This helps to wash away the loosened oil and residue, leaving your driveway looking refreshed.

For stubborn stains that persist, you may need to repeat the process or use Fila's No Spot, which is a powerful stain remover designed for tough marks.

Step 4: Protect the Surface with Fila Hydrorep

After cleaning, it's important to protect your stone or concrete surface to prevent future staining. Fila Hydrorep is a solvent-based water-repellent that doesn't alter the appearance of the stone. Applying it creates a barrier that resists oil, water, and dirt, making future cleaning much easier.

To apply, make sure the surface is completely dry. Spread the product evenly using a paintbrush or a low-pressure spray, ensuring full coverage. For optimal results, a second coat can be applied after four hours.
