Overview

CASA Backing Boards are lightweight, waterproof tile backing boards NZ made from tough XPS foam with fibreglass mesh and polymer coating. They’re built for wet areas like bathrooms and showers where moisture protection and insulation matter. Easy to cut, tidy to fix, and safe to use with underfloor heating, they make lining and tiling faster and cleaner on any site.

Waterproof and Solid:
Keeps moisture out and adds a rigid base under tiles. Ideal where constant damp or steam could cause swelling or mould.

Light and Easy to Cut:
Score and snap with a sharp knife, no dust or power tools needed. Great when working in tight bathrooms or upstairs renos.

Strong but Simple to Fix:
Can be glued straight to floors or walls with tile adhesive, or screwed into framing with washers if you’re using the thicker boards.

Insulates Well:
The XPS core holds heat in and stops cold from creeping through. Works tidy with underfloor heating to warm tiles faster.

Built for Kiwi Conditions:
Handles damp coastal air, daily shower use, and the odd cold morning without breaking down or softening.

Bathrooms and Showers:
Line walls or floors before tiling for full waterproofing and a clean, straight surface.

Wet Rooms and Laundries:
Gives strength and stability where floors cop constant moisture or mopping.

Renovations or New Builds:
Works equally well in old villas or fresh fit-outs where you need a reliable waterproof layer.

Custom Builds:
Use thicker boards to build benches, recesses, or raised platforms under baths or showers.

Cut to Size:
Measure and score with a utility knife, then snap cleanly along the line.

Fix in Place:
Stick straight onto timber or concrete with tile adhesive, or screw into studs using stainless washers and screws.

Seal and Tile:
Tape and seal joints with waterproof tape, then tile directly over once it’s firm.

Check the Setup:If you’re adding underfloor heating, make sure wiring or mats sit flat before you lay adhesive.

  • Concrete or screed floors
  • Timber or plywood subfloors
  • Plasterboard walls
  • Timber stud framing
  • Underfloor heating systems

Smooth, dense foam board coated both sides with grey polymer mortar and fibreglass mesh. Light to lift and easy to spot on site.

Pro Tip

When cutting, run a sharp blade twice along your mark instead of forcing it in one pass. The edges stay cleaner and the tile line looks straighter later on.

How to use guide or featured videos

Casa-boards are high-performance, waterproof, extruded polystyrene boards with fibreglass mesh embedded into a polymer mortar on each side, providing extra strength and rigidity. Suitable for new-build and refurbishment projects, Casa-boards are ideal for tiling wet areas like bathroom walls, showers, and wet rooms. These boards are lightweight, easy to handle, and easily cut and shaped with a sharp knife.

Casa-boards reduce wasted heat loss into the sub-floor, bringing the flooring to optimum temperature and reducing electricity running costs. They can be bonded to the sub-floor or wall surface using Technokolla tile adhesive and do not require mechanical fixings for wooden sub-floors or plaster walls. For wood studding, only 10mm boards should be used, fixed with screws and washers. Thicker boards are suitable for designing platforms, shelves, and racks.

1. Can I tile straight over CASA Backing Boards?
Yep, once the joints are sealed and the adhesive’s set, you can tile directly on top. No extra layers needed.

2. Do I need to screw them down or just glue?
For walls or thinner boards, tile adhesive is enough. For thicker sheets on framing, use stainless screws and washers.

3. Are they okay with underfloor heating?
Sweet as. The boards insulate well and help heating systems reach temp faster while keeping power use lower.

4. What’s the best way to cut CASA Boards?
Use a sharp knife or handsaw. Score both sides if you want a cleaner edge, especially for visible joins or recesses.

5. Can I use them outdoors?
Nah, they’re made for indoor wet areas. Stick to bathrooms, showers, or laundry zones where they’re protected from direct weather.
